The Words of the Witch

Last post I meted out the advice to “just refuse to eat any candy.” Useless. Easy advice to espouse from the comfort of a candy free home. Reminiscent of the “Just Say No” to drugs movement of the 80s. Good in theory, but impractical. You need strategies to enable you to JUST SAY NO and, to work those strategies, an understanding of what is making you say YES, in the first place. Why is it so hard to resist that, which you know it isn’t good for you? Topic for another day(s). My more practical approach to Halloween candy consumption is to acknowledge it will be eaten. I will eat Halloween candy; the question is what can I enjoy without it negatively impacting my training and life? Tonight, Pumpkins were carved, and a bit of candy was eaten. It was tasty for a bit.

Candy was hard to come by on Dunbar Street today. I grabbed the last 5 bags of sour patch kids from London Drugs on 30th. People were leaving the store empty handed. At Shoppers Drug Mart two blocks up, I added some Gummies, Tootsie Rolls and Rockets to the mix due to slim pickings. Stongs had nothing! No large boxes of mini-chocolate bars to be found anywhere. Praise be! It appears the entire Westside stocked up earlier this weekend.

My new advice is: leave the buying of the candy you want to give out, to the last minute. Prepare to make do with the dregs, as it likely to be a lot of stuff you don’t like and subsequently will be less tempting. Do not expect yourself to buy stuff you don’t like by choice. Realize, that overall, this whole topic, isn’t that big a deal in the realm of life. Enjoy Halloween. Eat well and drink lots of water on November 1st.
