Report from Mom
This summer I sent my mom information on participating in a study at UBC Bodyworks that is examining age-related differences in how skeletal muscles respond to lower-body exercise. The study involves two groups, men and women ages 19-30 and 65-85. Mom will be 80 in December! She went through the rigors of being assessed for the study and was accepted. Particpantion required three lab visits that included:
- Maximal fitness testing
- A single bout of resistance exercise (lower body weightlifting)
- Muscle biopsies and blood samples
It was a time committment and she described the fitness testing as grueling. Mom has trained with me for the last year and half, pretty regularly, though took a break when the gym was forced to shut down due to Covid restrictions ast December That said, she is back training with me regularly. She sent me the email below when the study concluded two days ago with the subject heading: Fun News!!
Kins!
I had my last app't re the UBC Bodyworks study today. The doctor who did my biopsies on
Tues and today was so nice. Today a new resident came in and when he arrived the doctor
said to me, "Tighten your calf muscle" and so I did. Then the doctor said to the resident
something along the lines of, "Do you see that muscle? That's about 3x more muscle than
other seniors her age. It's not from walking in the forest. It's from XFIT with her daughter." Isn't that a wonderful comment!!!!!!!!!
Yes, Mom! It. Is. Music to my ears. Keep up the great work!
